As a college student at the Institute for G.O.D, Wednesdays are a day I eagerly anticipate each week. Our days begin with worship and Bible teaching, and then we are sent out to serve those in need within our Nashville community. Among the various locations we volunteer at, McKendree Village holds a special place in my heart.

Since the beginning of this year, I've had the privilege of serving as a project lead at McKendree Village, an elderly care facility nestled in the heart of our city. From the moment I stepped foot into McKendree, I was struck by the unwavering love and dedication of the staff, particularly Donna and Mary. These incredible women pour their hearts into coordinating activities and providing care for the residents, going above and beyond to ensure they feel valued and cherished.

The elderly population is often overlooked in our society, leaving them vulnerable and in need of companionship and advocacy. Donna and Mary epitomize the essence of compassionate care, listening to the residents attentively and creatively finding ways to engage them. Whether it's organizing parties, leading exercise sessions, or hosting game nights, they are continually fostering a sense of community and belonging.

In my time at McKendree, I've witnessed firsthand the profound impact of these efforts. It's more than just a game of bingo or a friendly chat; it's about affirming the residents' worth and reminding them that they are not alone. Genesis 2:18 reminds us, "It is not good for man to be alone," and Donna, Mary, and the staff at McKendree embody this sentiment by creating opportunities for meaningful connections and companionship.

Being part of this mission has been both humbling and enriching. It's a reminder that even the simplest acts of kindness can make a world of difference in someone's life. As I reflect on my experience at McKendree Village, I'm reminded of the importance of showing up for others, of listening with empathy, and of the impact of genuine human connection.

In a world that often values productivity over presence, McKendree Village serves as a place where love and compassion reign supreme. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a small part of this journey and to witness the transformative power of community and care.

In the end, it's not just about the tasks we accomplish or the activities we organize; it's about the lives we touch and the hearts we uplift. My time at McKendree Village has reminded me that true fulfillment lies in serving others, in sharing moments of joy and laughter, and in embracing the beauty of human connection. It has been a blessing to be part of reminding residents that they are not alone or overlooked, but that they are valued, cared for and that they have us, one another, and the Lord.
